Mahakumbh Stampede: During the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, lakhs of devotees gathered at the Sangam confluence for the Mauni Amavasya bath. A sudden stampede ensued, resulting in the death of over 17 people. The Mela administration has currently confirmed 17 deaths.



The incident caused chaos at the Sangam confluence. Dozens of ambulances arrived at the scene immediately after the accident and transported the bodies of the deceased. Injured devotees were admitted to the central hospital in the mela complex. Several ambulances continuously ferried bodies from the mela towards the city.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What did Devkinandan Thakur say?</h2>



Spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur, commenting on the stampede, said, “I did not go to the Sangam Ghat because the crowds there are massive. I appeal to people not to insist on bathing only at the Sangam Ghat. The entire Ganga and Yamuna rivers are currently ‘amrit’ (nectar); you will receive the same merit if you bathe anywhere.”

Jagadguru Swami Rambhadracharya, commenting on the stampede, said, “I appeal to all devotees that a huge crowd has gathered in Prayagraj today, so they should not insist on taking a holy bath only at the Sangam Ghat. They should not leave their camps right now and should look for their safety.”

On the stampede-like situation in the Mahakumbh area, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said, “This is a sad incident. Whatever happened was not right. The Akhara Parishad has decided to cancel their Amrit Snan keeping in mind the public interest. The number of devotees gathered is more than estimated. I appeal to people that the entire mela area is Kumbh, so they can bathe at any ghat, not just the Triveni Ghat.”

Stampede at Mahakumbh: Following the death of 17 devotees in a stampede during the Mauni Amavasya bath at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh, anger has erupted on social media. Devotees and the general public are questioning the administration&#8217;s arrangements. Many people have shared videos and pictures of the disorganisation at the Mahakumbh on Twitter (now X), Facebook, and Instagram, showing crowds of devotees pushing and shoving without any control. Many on social media are demanding that the mela area&#8217;s security be handed over to the army to prevent such incidents in the future.



Accusing the administration, people say that ordinary devotees struggled with the chaotic crowds and disorganisation. Four murder accused found in MP hotel, wielding swords after slashing victims

A gruesome quadruple murder took place in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday. Four young men were brutally killed in broad daylight in Timri village, near Patan. The assailants, after hacking the victims to death, brandished their swords and fled the scene. On Tuesday, suspects in this heinous crime were apprehended from Pachmarhi, a hill station in Narmadapuram district.



Seven suspects were taken into custody by Jabalpur police in a raid at the Samarth Home Stay hotel in Pachmarhi. This action was taken in connection with the murder of the four young men in Timri village. The suspects, their faces covered with cloth, were transported to Jabalpur. Reports suggest that all the suspects arrived in Pachmarhi at night in a car without number plates.



Four individuals from two families were murdered in Timri, Patan, Jabalpur. On Tuesday, when the ambulances carrying the bodies arrived in the village after post-mortem examinations, the relatives blocked the Jabalpur-Damoh highway. Only after persuasion by MP Ashish Dubey and police officials did the relatives relent and take the bodies for the last rites. The highway remained blocked for about an hour and a half.



Sources suggest that Jabalpur police have apprehended 10 accused in the murders. Some of these accused were hiding in a hotel in Pachmarhi fearing arrest. However, Jabalpur police have not yet confirmed this information.

On average, an Indian individual spends 91 minutes online daily, while rural users spend approximately 89 minutes online. These figures indicate the rapid growth of digital service usage in rural areas.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reasons for Internet Adoption in Rural Areas</h2>



Several key factors are driving the increase in internet usage in rural India:

<li>Accessibility of Mobile Data: Mobile data prices have decreased by up to 90% since 2016, making it one of the world&#8217;s most affordable markets.</li>



<li>Smartphone Usage: With 1.2 billion smartphone users in India, affordable devices have helped connect rural users to the internet.</li>



<li>Content in Local Languages: 57% of users in rural areas prefer content in local languages, increasing their likelihood of digital engagement.</li>



<li>Government Schemes: Programmes like BharatNet have worked to bring broadband connectivity to gram panchayats.</li>
</ol>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Previous Budgets and Government Initiatives</h2>

The Rajasthan government will introduce a law to regulate coaching centres and prevent student suicides. A bill will be introduced in the upcoming assembly session. The state government informed the Rajasthan High Court on Monday. The next hearing is scheduled for February 10th.



The division bench of Justices Indrajit Singh and V K Bharwani issued this order on a suo moto petition filed in 2016 concerning the suicides of coaching students. Advocate General Rajendra Prasad informed the court that the state government will enact a law for the regulation of coaching centres, and work is underway on all aspects. Efforts are being made to present the bill in the upcoming assembly session. Taking note of this information from the Advocate General, the court adjourned the hearing.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Assembly Session to Begin January 31st</h2>



The Rajasthan Assembly budget session will commence on January 31st. The session will begin with the Governor, Haribhaau Bagde&#8217;s, first address to the assembly. Following the Governor&#8217;s address, there will be a discussion in the house from February 3rd to 6th. The Chief Minister will respond to this debate on February 6th. Mouni Amavasya Holy Dip: Begins at 8 PM, Administration on Alert

Mauni Amavasya is considered an extremely auspicious date in Hinduism, and bathing in the Sangam on this day holds special significance. It is believed that bathing in the holy river on this day destroys all sins and leads to salvation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">10 District DMs and SPs Take Charge</h2>



Given the expected crowds of millions of devotees for the bathing festival, the administration has made stringent arrangements. The District Magistrates (DM) and Superintendents of Police (SP) of 10 districts surrounding Prayagraj are personally overseeing the arrangements. A large number of police personnel, Rapid Action Force (RAF), and paramilitary forces have been deployed to maintain security and law and order in the mela area. The entire area is being monitored with the help of CCTV cameras and drones.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Akhada Marg Sealed, Traffic Plan Implemented</h2>



The administration has sealed Akhada Marg to manage the crowds of devotees. A special traffic plan has been implemented to ensure that traffic is not disrupted during the bathing. Heavy vehicles have been banned, and designated parking areas have been marked. Public transport is being provided to facilitate devotees&#8217; access to the Sangam.

Millions of devotees have arrived in Prayagraj from across the country to bathe in the Sangam on Mauni Amavasya. Devotees observed the tradition of bathing along with prayers and charity. Long queues were seen in the Sangam area from morning. The Akharas (religious orders) of Sadhus and Saints also took a bath on this occasion.

In addition to bathing, various religious and cultural events are being organised in the mela area. The atmosphere has become spiritual with religious discourses, devotional songs (bhajans and kirtans), and other religious events.
