<p><strong>Khel Ratna Award for 2024:</strong> 2024 was a special year for India in terms of sports. Four athletes, including young shooter Manu Bhaker, who created history by winning two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, and D Gukesh, the youngest world chess champion, will be awarded the country&#8217;s highest sports award, &#8216;Khel Ratna&#8217;. In addition, 32 other athletes will be awarded the Arjuna Award.</p>



<p>The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs announced the National Sports Awards 2024 on Thursday. The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a special ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 17 January 2025 at 11 am. Besides Manu Bhaker and Gukesh, Harmanpreet Singh, captain of the Indian men&#8217;s hockey team, who won a bronze medal at the Olympics, and para-athlete Praveen Kumar will be awarded the Khel Ratna. Manu not only hoisted the Indian flag in the individual event at the Olympic Games 2024 but also won a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event with Sarabjot Singh. This double success at the Paris Olympics has taken her to new heights of success.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gukesh Crowned Chess Champion</h2>



<p>Chess player D Gukesh will also be awarded the Khel Ratna Award. Gukesh achieved the honour of becoming the youngest world chess champion on 12 December last month. In the World Championship held in Singapore, Gukesh defeated Ding Liren of China to win the title. At just 18 years old, he became the world champion, a world record.</p>

New Year's Eve Truck Attack in New Orleans: 15 Dead, ISIS Flag Found


<p>A horrific attack took place in New Orleans, USA on New Year&#8217;s Day 2025. A large crowd had gathered near the French Quarter to celebrate when a man drove a truck into the throng, running over people and then opening fire. At least 15 people have died, and 25 more are injured. The FBI is investigating.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Who is Shamsud-Din Jabbar?</h2>



<p>According to Reuters, Shamsud-Din Jabbar (42) was a former US soldier who served for 13 years, including a deployment to Afghanistan. A US citizen from Texas, he worked as a Human Resource Specialist and Information Technology Specialist in the US Army from 2007 to 2015. He then joined the Army Reserve as an IT expert until 2020, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.</p>

<p>Jabbar was killed in a shootout with police at the scene. While the motive remains unclear, the FBI is investigating and expects to release a report soon. Federal and local law enforcement officials have stated that Jabbar did not act alone and are searching for accomplices.</p>

<p>The FBI is investigating the New Orleans attack as a potential act of terrorism. An ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) flag was found in the suspect&#8217;s vehicle.</p>

<p>President Joe Biden stated that he has been receiving regular updates from US federal law enforcement and security teams, including Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, and the Mayor of New Orleans. He confirmed the FBI is leading the investigation and treating the incident as an act of terrorism. He expressed gratitude for the swift response of local law enforcement and pledged full federal support.</p>

Weather Update: North India Shivers as IMD Issues 5-Day Alert for Delhi, UP, and Bihar


<p><strong>Weather Update:</strong> A severe cold wave is sweeping across northern India, including the national capital, Delhi. Besides Delhi, states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, and Jharkhand are experiencing severe cold conditions. The temperature in the plains is continuously dropping due to snowfall in the mountainous regions. No respite from the cold is expected in the coming days. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave will persist for the next five days. Meanwhile, a heavy rainfall alert has been issued for Tamil Nadu.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cold Day and Dense Fog Alert Issued</h2>



<p>According to the meteorological department, dense fog and cold day conditions may persist in some parts of northwest and central India in the coming days. A cold day and severe cold day alert has been issued for several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Dense fog warnings have been issued for Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and the northeastern states. According to the IMD, except for some areas in eastern, northwest, and west-central India, minimum temperatures are likely to be above normal in most parts of the country in January.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Triple Attack of Dense Fog, Cold Day, and Cold Wave in Delhi</h2>



<p>Delhi is currently experiencing a triple attack of dense fog, cold day, and cold wave conditions. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 18°C and the minimum temperature around 9°C. According to the meteorological department, there is a possibility of light rain on 4th and 5th January. If it rains, the cold will intensify.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Uttar Pradesh Braces for Intense Cold</h2>



<p>Uttar Pradesh continues to experience a severe cold wave. The IMD has issued a severe cold alert for Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Baghpat districts on 2nd January. A cold day is also likely in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Bulandshahr, Bijnor, Amroha, and Moradabad districts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Chilly Nights in Bihar</h2>



<p>Bihar is also experiencing a cold wave. According to the meteorological department, the maximum temperature will drop by 4-5°C in the coming days. Parts of Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Buxar, Bhojpur, Arwal, Patna, Vaishali, Gaya, Jehanabad, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Begusarai, and Khagaria districts will experience chilly nights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Heavy Rainfall Alert for Jammu and Kashmir</h2>



<p>Snowfall continues in the hilly regions. Heavy rainfall is occurring from Himachal Pradesh to Jammu and Kashmir. This is affecting the plains as well. The meteorological department has issued a cold day warning for some states in the coming days. Dense fog is also expected in some states, including Assam, Manipur, and Tripura.</p>

MP road crash: Two dead, three critical, group was en route to Mahakal temple


<p><strong>Road Accident in Ujjain:</strong> News of a horrific road accident has emerged from Madhya Pradesh. Five young men, travelling to Ujjain for a darshan of Mahakal, were victims of the accident. The accident was so severe that two died, while three others sustained serious injuries. This tragic incident occurred on the four-lane bridge on the Runija Road. It is reported that the car went out of control and crashed into a stationary container.</p>



<p>The three seriously injured young men were brought to the government hospital in Badnagar. After initial treatment, they were referred to the district hospital in Ujjain. The post-mortem of the deceased was conducted, and their bodies were handed over to their families.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">All occupants of the car were from Dhar</h2>



<p>According to information, all five young men, including the driver, were residents of Rajgarh (Dhar). They were going to Ujjain for a darshan of Lord Mahakal during the New Year. However, they became victims of the accident before they could see Mahakal. The accident occurred at 2:30 am on Wednesday. The car was carrying Harshideep Singh (24), son of Pankaj Singh (driver), Ayush (18), Kanha (19), Vikas (18), and Kanha alias Harshit, all residents of Rajgarh. The accident was so severe that the front of the car was completely destroyed. Harshideep and Kanha died at the scene. Vikas, Ayush, and Kanha alias Harshit were seriously injured. A JCB was used to remove the car.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sub-Inspector arrived at the scene</h2>



<p>Upon hearing about the accident, Sub-Inspector Hemant Katare arrived at the scene along with constable Rupesh Palen and other police personnel. They brought the injured and the bodies to the Badnagar government hospital, where after initial treatment, the three seriously injured were referred to the district hospital in Ujjain. Post-mortems of the deceased driver and another young man were conducted at the government hospital. After the post-mortem, the bodies were handed over to their families. The police have registered a case and launched an investigation.</p>


<p>Five young men travelling in a car to visit the Mahakal temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, met with a horrific road accident. Two of them lost their lives at the scene, while the other three sustained critical injuries.</p>

Over 4,000 Railway Jobs for 10th Pass Candidates


<p><strong>Railway Jobs:</strong> The new year has brought a wave of new job opportunities. South Central Railway has announced recruitment for 10th pass candidates. This recruitment drive will fill more than 4,000 apprentice positions. Notably, both men and women can apply. Female applicants are exempted from any application fee. Interested candidates can apply through the official website of RRC SCR: scr.indianrailways.gov.in. The last date for application is 27 January 2025.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Eligibility For Railway Jobs</h2>



<p>To apply for this railway recruitment, candidates must have passed their 10th standard examination with a minimum of 50 per cent marks. They must also possess an ITI certificate in the relevant trade. A total of 4232 positions will be filled.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Age Limit</h2>



<p>Applicants must be a minimum of 15 years old and a maximum of 24 years old. Reserved category candidates are eligible for age relaxation. Age will be calculated as of 28 December 2024.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Selection Process for Railway Recruitment</h2>



<p>Selection for the apprentice position in South Railway (RRC SCR) will be merit-based. There will be no written examination for this recruitment. However, all candidates must undergo document verification and a medical test. Selected candidates will receive a monthly salary of ₹7,700-20,200.</p>
